Abdelkader Messahel

Abdelkader Messahel was appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs of Algeria in May 2017. Previously he had been in charge of African issues at the Permanent Mission of Algeria to the UN in New York and Delegate to the UN General Assembly, Conferences of Heads of State and Organisation of Africa Unity (OAU) Councils of Ministers. From 1999 to 2000, during the Algerian Presidency of the OAU, he was Special Envoy of the President of the Republic in the peace process in the DRC and in the Great Lakes Region. In 2012 he was appointed Under Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs in charge of Maghreb and African Affairs, and in 2013 he became Minister of Communication. He was again appointed as Under Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, in charge of Maghreb and African Affairs (2014-2015), and then as Minister of Maghreb and African Affairs and Arab League (2015-2017).
